Labor Day is quickly approaching. Most Americans will have off from work and celebrating by grilling and spending time with loved ones. In fact, Labor Day is a holiday that is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers.  In a nutshell, it’s a day that celebrates the American workers for their stellar work ethic.

While it’s great to celebrate workers, it’s also important to shine a light on  important issues that need to be addressed.  Did you know that more than 200 million children today are child laborers? 120 million work in unsafe working conditions and most are 10 years of age or younger? Most child laborers are overworked and underpaid and that usually leads to a slew of problems that include:

  • Illiteracy
  • Health problems
  • Fatalities at work
  • Poverty
  • Depressions
  • Psychological stress
  • And more

It’s no secret by ending child labor that these children will have better education and a better quality of life. There will also be social and economic improvement, including new job creation.  However, ending child labor must start with us.  How can we end child labor today?

Together, we can achieve more!

It will be no easy feat, but together we can achieve more.  Here are a few things we can do to end child labor.

Raise awareness- The first key to any type of change is knowledge.  How can you change something you are not aware of?  Conduct local community meetings, ask to give talks at schools, and local businesses.  Educate your community on the impact child labor has on children and the economy.

Boycott retail sales– This may require a little investigation on your part. However, if you suspect that merchandise and products are made by children in unsafe working conditions, don’t purchase them.  Encourage your friends and family not to purchase them either.  Instead invest in sweat-shop free and fair trade products as much as you can.

Get involved–  There are many child labor organizations that help end child labor. It’s important to research these organizations and non-profits to see which ones you resonate with the most. This way you can do your part by volunteering, donating funds, or both.   While there are many worldwide child labor organizations, also research the lesser known ones in your community.  Here are a few that you can contact today:

Of course, we would love for you to continue your Labor Day, however, please keep in mind the millions of children who are suffering and need your help.  A small donation or a few hours of your time can go a long way to help eradicate child labor. Contact any of the organizations above and do your part!
